Across the Essence Patient Solutions network, more than 3 million people are living with a migraine diagnosis. That’s not just a number; it’s millions of lives interrupted by searing pain, blurred vision, nausea, and an overwhelming need to retreat from the world. For many, migraines are more than just a headache; they are a disabling, chronic neurological disease that touches every corner of daily life.
The emotional toll is just as severe. Migraines are strongly linked with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety. This isn’t a coincidence. The unpredictability of attacks, the social isolation they cause, and the sense of helplessness can devastate mental health. Patients with chronic migraine are 2 to 5 times more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression than the general population, creating a dangerous cycle of pain and despair.
Despite these realities, treatment remains fragmented and inconsistent. Many patients bounce between emergency rooms, primary care, and neurologists without a clear, long-term care plan. Worse, many have never been offered the most effective, modern treatments available today.
That includes CGRP-targeting therapies, a class of preventive and acute treatments designed specifically for migraine. These medications, which block the activity of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), have dramatically changed the treatment landscape. They can significantly reduce migraine frequency, improve function, and restore quality of life.
Yet uptake remains far too low. Why? Lack of provider awareness. Prior authorization hurdles. Fragmented care pathways. Stigma.
The result? Millions remain untreated (or undertreated) despite the availability of breakthrough options that could change their lives.
For the 3 million+ patients in our network alone, the implications are massive. Fewer than half have ever been evaluated for preventive migraine therapy. And of those, only a fraction have been prescribed a CGRP therapy even though they meet clinical criteria.
This is a clear and urgent opportunity for pharmaceutical leaders to step in with education, navigation support, and patient-first strategies that bridge the care gap. The CGRP class represents more than innovation; it represents hope. But only if patients can access it.
We can’t afford to let migraines remain invisible. Not when millions are quietly suffering. Not when the tools to help are already here.
The time to act is now. Let’s ensure no patient is left behind in the dark.
